WALKA O ŻYCIE MALWINKI – W JEJ GŁÓWCE GUZ MÓZGU – MEDULLOBLASTOMA…
ENGLISH VERSION —> LINK
Since February 7, 2016, Malwinka has been fighting cancer – a grade 4 brain tumor which is Medulloblastoma, an anaplastic variant accompanied by supratentorial hydrocephalus and intraventricular hypertension. The daughter underwent an operation with incomplete tumor removal, after which she was in the intensive care unit for two weeks. During her stay in the hospital, she underwent another ventricular-peritoneal valve implantation.
Malwinka was admitted to the Department of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology (24/02/2016), University Children’s Hospital of Cracow in a state of right hemiparesis, with memory loss, loss of speech and disappearance of the swallowing reflex. She started chemotherapy in accordance with the protocol I HR of the CNS cancer treatment program for children from 2013. During the treatment, diagnostics was completed and multifocal spread of the disease in the CNS (intracranial meninges and within the thoracic and lumbosacral spine, pineal gland) was confirmed. My daughter had many complications during this treatment, including numerous pancytopenia, pneumonia and a cerebral infarction.
After the basic 4 cycles of chemotherapy, Malwinka underwent radiation therapy – 33 irradiation of the entire head and spine with the highest possible dose. After this treatment period, the last stage was left, i.e. maintenance chemotherapy, consisting of 8 cycles. At the beginning it was not without complications. After administering the first dose of chemotherapy, the daughter suffered polyneuropathy – she was allergic to Vincristine, so the doctors had to change one of the drugs at this stage of treatment. Malwinka endured the beginnings of maintenance chemotherapy very badly (very frequent and profuse vomiting, dehydration). In addition in December 2016 seizures occurred and anti-epileptic drugs were started.
2017 brought more frequent and longer stays in the oncology ward, mainly due to complications after chemotherapy, but also due to the introduction of new antiepileptic drugs – the first two did not give the expected effect, the third was effective for about half a year. Currently, Malwinka has a fourth drug introduced, combined with a third one.
At the end of the maintenance treatment, the results of the ENT examinations revealed that my daughter had a symmetrical bilateral, profound symmetrical sensorineural hearing loss with indications for the use of a hearing aid. In December 2017, due to disturbances in the functioning of the ventricular-peritoneal valve, after two revision procedures, it was decided to replace this valve with a ventricular-atrial valve. In February 2018, after control tests, secondary adrenal cortex and thyroid insufficiency were diagnosed and additional steroid treatment was introduced.
Due to long stays in the hospital, sometimes also in solitary confinement (with decreased immunity), the daughter’s joint contractures intensified – not only the right leg affected by paresis, but also the left one. Currently, Malwinka is not able to straighten her legs.
Our activities are primarily focused on physical rehabilitation, speech therapy rehabilitation so that the daughter can function normally among her peers, and not spend long periods in isolation as before.
Currently, Malwinka is under oncological, neurological, endocrinological, ENT and ophthalmological control. Every 3 months we have to have control resonances of the head and the whole spine – then the worst thing is waiting for the result … Because everything must be fine!
During our daughter’s illness, a moment came when one of us, as parents, had to quit the job. It was caused by the need for constant care of our daughter and frequent visits to the hospital. So our financial possibilities are very limited. Due to this, we are asking for support, thanks to which we will be able to meet the needs of our child – purchase the necessary rehabilitation equipment, expensive medicines, braces, orthoses, and provide specialist consultation at any time, whenever it is needed.
Thank you for helping our child – Malwinka’s parents
