Zosia – Self-reliance is My Aim!
My name is Zosia. I was born on the 4th of May, 2022. I was born as a strongand brave girl. Everyone also says that I am very beautiful.
At first, nothing indicated that I was sick. A few days after my birth my mummy and I returned home, where I was to start my life as a healthy and happy newborn baby.
Unfortunately, our joy was interrupted by a phone call from the hospital informing that my mummy needs to take me there again, immediately. The doctor delivered very bad news. He informed my mummy that I was diagnosed with … SMA! It sounds terrible. This disease is called Spinal Muscular Atrophy and causes the death of neurons that are responsible for the work of muscles related not only to movement, but also to swallowing, breathing and life.
Due to the fact that I was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy so quickly, I will be treated right away. In a few days I am going to the hospital where I will be given the first injectionto my spine, which may slow down the progression of the disease. Unfortunately, I will have to take these injections through all my life, which, in turn, is associated with multiple hospital stays and multiple spinal injections.
I am a brave girl, but I am really afraid of the complications that await me. I am also concerned that the therapy offered to me may cease to be reimbursed in the future in my country, and its cost is enormous. It’s about 1 million PLN a year for the rest of my life. Yet, the doctor told my mum that there is a way to stop my illness and allow me to live and function like every other child, like every other human – gene therapy. This therapy is the most expensive drug in the world, which can really free me from the effects of SMA once and for all. Even though I am so small and so young, I already have one big dream: to undergo gene therapy and overcome SMA so that I can grow like my peers and live independently in the future. Unfortunately, its cost is 9.5 million PLN, and besides, I also need constant rehabilitation and constant care of specialists.
This amount makes my dream of normal functioning unrealistic, because this cost exceeds the financial capacity of my loved ones. We will not be able to collect such a sum of money alone. That is why I, Zosia, am begging you for your help. I know that there is nothing impossible in the world, the only challenge is how to achieve it.
